Annual Federal Conference 2005

Federal Conference is the supreme governing authority of the Australian Education Union. Delegates to Federal Conference include the Federal President, Deputy Federal President and delegates representing the General Division, TAFE Division and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members in each state and territory of Australia. Delegates hold office for two years, after which time they may be re-elected. Federal Conference meets annually to discuss the priorities and policies of the union. It also determines changes to the AEU Federal Rules and appoints professional officers to work in the AEU Federal Office.

The AEU's 2005 Conference “Building Quality Public Education for the Future,” was held in Fremantle from January 14-16. Discussion centred on the role of teacher unions in building quality public education and speakers commented from an international, a union and a classroom perspective. Conference delegates provided input into the next phase of the AEU's ongoing public education campaign. Delegates also unanimously endorsed a resolution calling for staff in pre-schools, schools, TAFE institutions and other education workplaces to donate a half day's pay to help rebuild education infrastructure in those countries affected by the Boxing Day tsunami.
