Annual Federal Conference 2006

Federal Conference is the supreme governing authority of the Australian Education Union. Delegates to Federal Conference include the Federal President, Deputy Federal President and delegates representing the General Division, TAFE Division and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members in each state and territory of Australia. Delegates hold office for two years, after which time they may be re-elected. Federal Conference meets annually to discuss the priorities and policies of the union. It also determines changes to the AEU Federal Rules and appoints professional officers to work in the AEU Federal Office.

The AEU’s 2006 Conference “Public Education for Human Rights and Social Justice” was held in Brisbane from 14 - 16 January. Discussion centred on the role of public education in promoting and maintaining human rights and social justice, with a keynote address presented by Rosslyn Noonan, the Chief Commissioner of the NZ Human Rights Commission. Delegates heard from ACTU President, Sharan Burrow, and considered strategies to combat the attacks on workers’ rights from the Howard government; as well as providing input into the next phase of the AEU’s ongoing public education campaign.
