Amnesty International and the Australian Education Union Launch Human Rights Training Manual

At the AEU Annual Federal Conference today, former Senator Margaret Reynolds launched a Human Rights training manual which is a joint production and publication by Amnesty International and the AEU. The Manual is our contribution to the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights.

The manual contains seven stand-alone modules which address human rights issues as well as reference materials, resources and contacts.

The manual is designed to be used:

for trade union training;
by teachers for professional development;
by teachers to develop curriculum for students;
by the community.

Each module contains four or five training sessions dealing with topics which are pertinent to the key themes to each module. The modules include:

human rights now and into the next millennium;
women's rights;
children's rights and child labour;
trade union and labour rights;
Human rights -indivisible and universal;
Human rights interdependent and interrelated;
working for human rights -what can you do.

The human rights arena is often complex with many issues being the subject of fierce debate and on occasion major conflict. This manual focuses on the dissemination of key principles and documents that will promote activities which will assist in the broader understanding of and commitment to human rights.
