John Battams

John Battams is General Secretary of the Queensland Teachers' Union and Branch Secretary of the AEU(Q) He is also Senior Vice-President of the Queensland Council of Unions (QCU) and plays a key role in strategy and planning of the QCU.

John Battams was a teacher and Head of Department in Queensland secondary schools for 8 years in both city and country centres. He became an Officer of the QTU as an Organiser for Brisbane/North Sunshine Coast in 1985 and was appointed Acting General Secretary in 1990 and General Secretary in 1992.

He holds a Bachelor of Economics and a Diploma in Education.

The QTU is one of Queensland's largest unions with in excess of 36 000 members and a membership rate in excess of 95% amongst permanently employed teachers. The QTU has over 80 staff including 21 full-time Officers. As General Secretary, John Battams and his Deputy Graham Moloney are responsible for the management and operation of the Union offices.
