Following discussions between representatives of teacher unions from across Australia, the Australian Education Union has released the following statement:
"The AEU has been alarmed by the remarks and sentiments of the Governor-General displayed in a range of his media statements in recent times, most especially the comments made on the "Australian Story" program. Many of the values which he has espoused are thoroughly inconsistent with the values and goals of public education. Teachers in public education have worked to build an educational environment in which all young girls and boys are happy, secure and free from exploitation. The Governor-General's remarks which have sought to blame an abuse victim for her own exploitation have caused alarm across Australia especially amongst those working with children.
Teachers have a professional duty of care to their students which extends to mandatory reporting. We take that duty very seriously indeed. Matters of sexual abuse are particularly sensitive. It is in this context also that the remarks of the Governor General generate concerns for the profession.
We note that a diverse range of organisations and leaders vitally concerned with child welfare have felt the need to formally distance themselves from the current holder of the Governor-General's office. These organisations have taken the view that they cannot continue with their responsibilities to children and continue an association with Dr Hollingworth.
The Federal President is to write to the Governor General to outline our concerns. This letter should also convey our view that in the current context it would not be appropriate for him to visit public schools as it would send mixed messages to our students as to what is acceptable behaviour or belief. Our duty of care to our students and our support for the values of public education are our first responsibilities in these matters. Any school in Australia which decides that the Governor-General is persona non grata in their school will be supported in its stand."
