EXPENDITURE AS A PER CENT OF GDP

Between 1978/79 and 1983/84 Australia spent 3.6% of GDP on schools.

The red area shows the actual expenditure

State/Territory Performance

Overall there has been a decline in real expenditure by states and territories.

ACT, SA, Tasmania and most noticeably Victoria declined in this period.

COMMONWEALTH AND TOTAL EXPENDITURE

Commonwealth expenditure, on the other hand, continues to show a consistent upward trend in expenditure on all schools.

Putting these together shows that there has been a slight increase in expenditure on all schools, of just under $200 m.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT BIAS

After some initial volatility in which public schools sometimes actually got the biggest slice, since 1983, private schools have consistently received the larger proportion.

Average expenditure per private school student, including private expenditure, overtook average public school student expenditure around 1993.
