2008 Federal Women's Conference - Workshop 1
Body image, eating disorders, self-esteem and self-harm
(Natasha Jeremiejcyk)

Of the women who participated in the What AEU Women Want survey this year, over 90% indicated they were either “very concerned” (51%) or “moderately concerned” (41%) about girls and women with body image difficulties, eating disorders, self esteem concerns or who were self-harming. AEU members place the prevalence of these issues in their own school communities are “extremely prevalent” (27.6%) or “well known” (58.2%). Which, while this shows the issues are widespread, the survey results also indicate that as a result over half the schools/worksites (59.4%) have taken action to address these issues with students.

Natasha Jeremiejcyk from Eating Disorders Victoria will speak about EDV's work and their DELIVER resources and education program. The workshop aims to provide delegates with:

  • An understanding of the relevance of eating disorders and their role in supporting people at risk of, or experiencing an eating disorder;

  • Skills for better detection of people who may be at risk of, or experiencing an eating disorder;

  • More confidence and competency when intervening and supporting people at risk of, or experiencing an eating disorder; and

  • Effective strategies and skills to aid in reducing the incidence of eating disorders and other negative body image attributes.
