2011 AEU Federal Women's Conference

The 2011 Federal Women's Conference is to be held on Saturday/Sunday, 8/9 October at Conferences on Clarendon, 120 Clarendon Street, Southbank. The theme will be "Another World is Possible, Another World is Necessary: the next 100 years", which is inspired by the EI World Women's Conference.

Women's aspirations for a better life were far reaching at the turn of the century and indeed their commitment to action was revolutionary. With much progress in some places, a significant challenge remains to ensure the human rights, freedoms, prosperity and gender justice for women globally. Within Australia too, women unionists must be part of creating a future that is visionary and truly equitable.

The Conference panels and workshops will take on specific challenges in our workplaces as well as explore the change we want to see and the mechanisms to effect change available to women unionists.

The panel discussions will address some developments for women and girls globally and a vision for change locally regarding young people's relationship to the environment, food and their health.

  • Carolyn Hannan, Associate Professor at University of Lund and ex-Director of the UN Division for the Advancement of Women, will discuss global issues in education for women and girls.

  • Stephanie Alexander, founder Stephanie Alexander's Garden kitchen program, will be our second guest panellist and will discuss her vision, the outcomes and the process to extend nation-wide her program.

  • Helen Forgasz, (whose work investigating student achievement in maths at MonashUniversity was reported by Carolyn Milburn recently in The Age will also be available to provide a gender report from NAPLAN data.

  • Pat Forward, AEU Federal TAFE Secretary will discuss VET System Reform and the AEU TAFE Campaign.

  • Penny Gilmour, AEUACT Branch Secretary, will explain the Rosemary Richards' Scholarship concept and Rosemary's legacy.

A second panel, to begin the Sunday's session will include a speaker reporting on the pay equity case and the AEU 5 Year Plan for Women data will be discussed.

AEU delegates greatly appreciate the support from our sponsors.
