The AEU wants girls and young women to be given the full range of necessary support and information to make career choices but also throughout their life.
Gender still impacts the life and livelihoods of women and girls in Australia.
In making career and life decisions students should be aware of:
- the pay differentials between men and women
- the likely gender breakdowns in occupations
- the possibility, or not, of flexible and family friendly conditions
- the likelihood of secure full-time or part time employment, opposed to casual employment
- where to go to for support, like the relevant union, when things go wrong in their working life
- which emerging occupations and industries might offer fantastic opportunities
- how important superannuation and retirement savings is for women
- what sexual harassment and discrimination looks like and what do about it if it happens, and
- fundamentally, that you can chose a career that you will love and are good at, but that there may be some consequences of this.
Girls and young women must also be given information and support to ensure they can reach their full potential.
Girls' lives and potential can be negatively impacted by:
- an unstable home-life
- health concerns
- financial concerns
- sexuality issues
- body image issues
- matters of grief and loss
It is hoped that some of these websites providing careers advice, but importantly support regarding life issues, will assist students on their journey to adulthood.
