2000 ACTU Women's Congress

Susan Hopgood, Michaela Kronemann and Barb Jennings from Federal Office were part of the AEU delegation at the Inaugural ACTU Women's Congress in Adelaide on 20th & 21st August 2000.

Over 150 women from the breadth of the union movement worked on Action Plans for the ACTU and their unions. The AEU contingent was the largest union delegation and had women from New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, ACT, Western Australia and Northern Territory, as well as Federal Office.

The main areas focused on were those identified from the recent ACTU Congress:

  • Living Wage/Equal Pay/Conditions
  • Work and Family/paid Maternity Leave/Family Friendly Agreements
  • Organising women - including young and aboriginal women
  • Workplace Bullying and Violence/Sexual Harassment
Day 2 had a focus on Reconciliation, Human rights, International Unionism and Community/Corporate campaigning.

Lowitja O'Donohue, spoke of the need for Reconciliation and the 51% real unemployment faced by many Aboriginal communities.

We formed Action Plans and Recommendations around all these areas. We "condemned and deplored" the Federal Government on discriminatory IVF and welfare changes and we sang along with the South Australian Trade Union Choir.
