The Australian Education Union said today that Federal President Angelo Gavrielatos has announced his resignation after seven years as leader.
Mr Gavrielatos will be taking up a position with the international union, Education International, after his departure on January 31, 2015.
AEU Federal Secretary Susan Hopgood said Mr Gavrielatos had served with great distinction and his departure would be a significant loss for the union.
“Angelo has done an outstanding job on behalf of our members,” Ms Hopgood said.
“He has always been a passionate and determined advocate for high quality public education and should be immensely proud of what he has achieved as the federal president.”
Mr Gavrielatos said: “It has been a privilege and an honour to have led our union over the last seven years. The dedication of our members has motivated and inspired me during this time.”
“The Gonski campaign has been the highlight. We have made great progress and I know that effort will continue.”
The AEU plans to conduct a ballot of federal conference delegates to determine the next federal president.
