Statement from the Australian Education Union re: John Setka

14 June 2019

The Australian Education Union is strongly committed to campaigning against family and domestic violence to ensure that everyone has access to a safe home, workplace and community.

We denounce all forms of family and domestic violence and in particular, the significant impact of violence against women.

We believe it is vitally important to educate our members and the broader community about family and domestic violence and our fundamental responsibilities to take action to prevent it and to campaign for better rights for all who are impacted.

As union leaders, we cannot condone any actions which do not accord with the values we uphold and we must call out any behaviours which cause damage to the union movement and our members.

The AEU fully supports ACTU Secretary Sally McManus’s call for the Victorian Secretary of the CFMMEU, John Setka, to stand down. We also support the full statement released by the ACTU on Thursday 13th June.

The AEU will make no further comment on this matter.
