The AEU joins with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and public schools, pre-schools and TAFE colleges in celebrating NAIDOC week from the 7th – 14th July 2019.

NAIDOC week, celebrated annually in July, recognises and honours the history, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year’s NAIDOC week theme is: Voice, Treaty, Truth – Let’s work together for a shared future.

The theme references the three elements of the Uluru Statement from the Heart which calls for a sequence of reforms: first, a First Nations Voice to Parliament enshrined in the Constitution; second, a Makarrata Commission to supervise treaty processes; and third, a process of truth-telling; in order to secure and underpin the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and to ensure these rights can be exercised and enjoyed.

NAIDOC week is one of many opportunities for public schools, pre-schools and TAFE colleges to broaden students’ knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures through engagement with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The AEU encourages all members and the public education community more broadly to partner with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to celebrate NAIDOC week 2019, and/or to participate in community-organised events.

(NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920′s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.)
