This week is NAIDOC Week
9 November 2020
NAIDOC Week 2020 acknowledges and celebrates that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact. Under the theme ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’, this week acknowledges that the very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The AEU encourages all members and the public education community more broadly to partner with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to celebrate NAIDOC Week, and to participate in community-organised events. For more information, go to https://www.naidoc.org.au/
During NAIDOC week a particular focus for public schools, pre-schools and TAFE colleges is to broaden students’ knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures through engagement with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The AEU has a long history of supporting and defending the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and of supporting NAIDOC Week. The union ensures that all governments are held to account for their responsibility to improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The AEU also works to ensure that non - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers and workers have an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories and cultures and that the Australian curriculum includes these perspectives.
The AEU will celebrate the work of members on social media during NAIDOC Week 2020, using the hashtags #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek and #NAIDOC.
