The resounding ‘Yes’ vote to allow same-sex marriage in Australia has been welcomed by the Australian Education Union today. A strong majority of 62 per cent of the more than 12 million respondents voted ‘Yes’, with the ‘Yes’ vote succeeding in every state and territory.
‘This is an historic day of justice for the LGBTIQ community, and a welcome vote for acceptance and inclusion across all communities, including in our schools,’ said Australian Education Union Federal President, Correna Haythorpe, today.
‘It now rests with the Australian Parliament to give clear effect to this democratic statement of the Australian people by moving to quickly enact legislation that enables same-sex marriage without exemptions that amount to continuing discrimination,’ she said.
The union congratulates the efforts of its members in their strong show of support and campaigns to achieve this important win.
