Brungle Public School


Location: Snowy Mountains in NSW

Our school is a small school on the edge of the Snowy Mountains. Nine of our 10 students are indigenous. We are extremely proud of the fact that we are the only Aboriginal Environmental Education Centre within a Public School in NSW. We regularly host schools who come and spend a day learning traditional Wiradjuri Culture, lead by two wonderful elders, National parks Wildlife Rangers, school staff and of course most importantly our senior students.

How has your school used its Gonski funding?

We have used and continue to use Gonski funding to employ an Aboriginal language tutor to teach the students Wiradjuri which is used as part of our daily routines as well as welcoming visitors on more formal occasions as well as employing a SLSO 4 days a week to target improving and increasing literacy and numeracy skills of all our students. We also use our Gonski funding to ensure that our students are able to participate in a wide range of educational opportunities.

How has Gonski made a positive difference for students?

Gonski funding has allowed our students to become more effective learners due to the great level of support they are able to receive. It nurtures the growth of our students, not just academically but also socially and emotionally.

What could your school do with Gonski funding in the future?

We will use Gonski funding in the future to build upon what we have established and to allow further achievement of our students.

Lismore High Campus has an enrolment of 365, of whom 80% are from low-income backgrounds, 20% are Aboriginal, and 7% come from non-English-speaking backgrounds
Mansfield State School
Mansfield SS has a stable enrolment pattern of over 900 students. 20 per cent of its students were born overseas in 44 different countries, many of them coming to Australia from India, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand and the Philippines.
Sarah Redfern High School
Originally built for students from the Minto public housing estate, but since 2005 a Housing NSW Community Renewal Project has brought about significant changes in Minto.
Wadalba Community School
Wadalba Community School, located on the NSW Central Coast, is a comprehensive P-12 school with an enrolment of 1,400 students. 75% of students are from low-income backgrounds, 8% of students are Indigenous, and 7% of students are from non-English-speaking backgrounds.
