AEU Congratulates Albanese Government on Re-Election
Australian Education Union (AEU) congratulates the Albanese Government on its re-election and renewed mandate to support a fair and inclusive education system.
“The AEU congratulates Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the Labor Government on its historic election result,” said AEU President Correna Haythorpe.
“The Prime Minister’s vision ‘no one held back, no one left behind’ captures the very essence of public education and reflects what teachers and education support staff work for every day.”
“It reflects our shared belief that every child deserves access to a high-quality, fully-funded public education regardless of their background or circumstances.”
Over the past term, the Albanese Government has made meaningful progress on critical education priorities including:
- A clear commitment to fully funding public schools with guaranteed funding rolling out for all schools to achieve 100% of the Schooling Resource Standard (SRS).
- Rebuilding TAFE, with a permanent 100,000 Free TAFE places annually, and increased funding that improves job security for TAFE teachers and more VET options for students.
- A Three Day Guarantee of early childhood education and care, with a better supported workforce through multi-employer bargaining and a 15 per cent wage increase for early childhood teachers and educators.
- The Commonwealth Prac Payment, from July this year, providing financial assistance for ITE students as they do their teaching placements.
- Student debt relief, which will assist those studying and recently graduated teachers and will provide cost of living relief.
“We acknowledge the significant steps the Albanese Government has already taken to address funding inequality in public education and to support our teachers,” Ms Haythorpe said.
“But there is still work to do to resolve Australia’s teaching workforce shortages. And, to invest in providing high quality teaching and learning facilities for public education.”
“We look forward to continuing to work with the Albanese Government to achieve these priorities.”
“We also congratulate all members of Parliament elected yesterday who have supported the For Every Child and Rebuild with TAFE campaign. We look forward to working with you in the new Parliament.”
