AEU Welcomes Federal Budget

The Australian Education Union (AEU) welcomes the Albanese Government’s commitment to public education in the 2025 Federal Budget, which will see significant investment in public education across Australia.

“By prioritising public schools, TAFE, and early childhood education, the Albanese government has demonstrated a commitment to building an education system that works for every Australian, regardless of their location or background,” AEU Federal President Correna Haythorpe said.

“This week’s commitment of $16.5 billion over 10 years is the start of a life changing investment in our children and their public schools, an investment that will ensure every student in every state and territory has access to high-quality education.”

“With funding agreements now signed across the nation, the Albanese Government has shown its commitment to finally make the underfunding of public schools a thing of the past.”

“It’s an investment that means more resources for schools and better results for students, who regardless of their circumstances, will be able to access the best possible educational opportunities.”

“Fully funding public schools is the best investment we could make for our future.”

“Cost of living measures such as the Commonwealth Prac Payment and Student Debt Relief will help attract people to the teaching profession by alleviating some of the ongoing costs associated with Initial Teacher Education.”

Ms Haythorpe also welcomed the ongoing funding for Free TAFE, a crucial initiative that has already made a tremendous difference for students and working Australians.

“Our TAFE members have welcomed the Albanese Government’s commitment to vocational education and the revitalisation of TAFE as an essential pillar of Australia's education system,” Ms Haythorpe said.

“With the Budget provision for 100,000 ongoing Free TAFE places annually, TAFE will be able to continue to empower individuals to pursue career pathways in industries that are vital to our economy.”

Ms Haythorpe welcomed the $1 billion funding for the Building Early Education Fund that will invest in the creation of early childhood education centres, built and co-located with public schools, ensuring seamless educational experiences for young children.

“This forward-thinking approach acknowledges the importance of early childhood education in providing every child the educational foundations needed for their schooling journey,” Ms Haythorpe said.

“By building these facilities alongside public schools, the government is making a clear commitment to supporting the development of the whole child, from their earliest years through to their final years of schooling.”
