AEU WELCOMES REPORT SUPPORTING FREE TAFE BILL

28 February 2025

The Australian Education Union (AEU) is calling on the parliament to support the Free TAFE Bill 2024, after a Senate inquiry has found it should be passed.

The AEU welcomes the Education and Employment Legislation Committee’s report into the Free TAFE Bill 2024, which recommended that the Senate pass this crucial legislation.

AEU Federal President Correna Haythorpe said that free TAFE had been life-changing for students and teachers, but it is at risk should Peter Dutton win the next election.

“The Albanese Government has prioritised TAFE as the public provider, ensuring that free TAFE delivers for students, for teachers and for communities across Australia. This is all at risk should Peter Dutton win the election,” Ms Haythorpe said.

“The Coalition has made it clear they do not support free TAFE, and it will be cut if they win the election.

“This is further evidenced by the Coalition’s dissenting report that recommends that the Free TAFE Bill 2024 not be passed by the Senate.

“With a federal election imminent, it is clear that the Free TAFE Bill must be passed as quickly as possible to ensure free TAFE is secured for the future.”

Ms Haythorpe said this legislation will bring certainty to the TAFE sector after years of neglect under the Coalition.

“We welcome the Committee’s recognition of the importance of TAFE and the role it plays in delivering high-quality education and training,” Ms. Haythorpe said.

“For teachers and students, the bill represents an opportunity to see greater investment in TAFE, improving facilities, resources, and job security for educators dedicated to delivering high-quality training.”

Ms Haythorpe thanked the Committee for acknowledging the AEU’s submission, which highlighted the need for additional investment in TAFE to ensure long-term sustainability and capacity to meet student demand.

With the federal election approaching, the AEU urges all Senators to support the Free TAFE Bill 2024 and ensure that this landmark legislation is passed as soon as possible, to lock in the benefits to students, teachers, and industries in need of skills across the country.

“All indications show that a Dutton Government will cut free TAFE. This will be devastating for students and teachers,” Ms Haythorpe said.

“We call on the Senate to act swiftly and pass this legislation without delay, to ensure free TAFE will continue.”
