Leadership Change at AEU Federal
From Sunday, February 1, current AEU Federal Deputy President Correna Haythorpe will formally take over as AEU Federal President, replacing Angelo Gavrielatos.
Ms Haythorpe was elected unopposed last year, after Mr Gavrielatos announced his resignation in November to take up a position with the international union, Education International.
She has spent 17 years as a teacher in public primary schools, mainly in northern Adelaide and Port Pirie, in South Australia. She became active in the South Australian branch of the union in the 1990s and served as branch President from 2008 to 2013.
Mr Gavrielatos has been AEU Federal President for seven years and played a key role in the union’s campaigns for Gonski funding reforms and for high-quality public education.
