International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia 2019 (IDAHOBIT) is coming up and provides a great opportunity for schools to show their continued support for LGBTIQ staff and students.

IDAHOBIT was founded as a day to reflect on the progress made nationally and globally to reduce violence, harassment, stigma and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people. It commemorates 17 May 1990, the day homosexuality was declassified as a mental disorder by the World Health Organisation and is celebrated in 130 countries, including 37 countries where homosexuality is still illegal.

Last year, schools celebrated by going rainbow for the day by wearing a splash of colour and decorating their classrooms, hosting rainbow bake sales and putting up posters.

There are a host of ideas that can help foster inclusion on IDAHOBIT’s website: https://www.idahobit.org.au/index.php/schools

In addition, the Minus 18 network have put together a good resource on how to make every day IDAHOBIT with top tips for calling out discrimination: https://www.minus18.org.au/index.php/articles/item/883-how-to-make-everyday-idahobit
